2011 New Year's Resolutions

Hi everyone! To quote my good friend, Sal, "I feel more like I do today, then when I first got here." I have enjoyed a wonderful past couple of weeks, due to having my wonderful son home with me. I've also finally had a few days of 'down time' where I can recharge my life instead of living inside a never slowing gerbil wheel, "Going nowhere fast." I've finally started painting and writing songs again which soothes my soul. The picture I'm including with this post is an acrylic painting I created over the past two days. The entire image doesn't fit on the scanner, so here is a portion of the painting.
It reflects 'somewhat' the Expressionist movement I've been studying. One goal for the New Year is to create my new art web site including my new artist statement. I hope to submit art to shows again, and to have a solo show and/or to be included in group shows.
In regards to my music, I plan on recording a couple of new tunes I've written and then release my CD. I also plan on booking acoustic original gigs. Thanks to all of my bffs for listening to me bend their ears this past year; my sister-Kristie, Susan, Maureen, Cathy, Cindy, and Carol. Thanks to all of the musicians I've made music with; Tim, Hans, Freddy, Billy, Rick, Dr. Z, Sheldon, Jeff, Doug, Eric, Chris, etc. Thanks to my wonderful students. Thanks most of all to my son and cat! Instead of a poem I'm including a list of New Year's Resolutions I wrote last night. I've also linked Claude Debussy - Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun to this posting. Have a Nice Day! xxoo

2011 New Year’s Resolutions
1. To love myself more, thus I will be able to love other people more.
2. To not be so hard on myself.
3. To forgive myself constantly, and to forgive other people.
4. To be true to myself, my dreams, and my desires.
5. To continue having an ‘attitude of gratitude.’
6. To not take myself so seriously. (Dr. Wayne Dyer)
7. To live with courage, integrity, and kindness as my foundation.
8. To remember that if I can’t say something nice,
even in defense of myself, I shall not say anything at all.
9. To remember not to throw my pearls before swine,
and if I have to (to earn a living ), then to turn a deaf ear to criticism (consider the source), and to not give them my energy.
10. To create the best life I can, where my creativity will flourish and my spirituality will grow to new heights.
To create a life protected and surrounded with love.

Santa on Vacation

Hi Everyone,
I just finished sending out the youtube video links to all of my students from the recital . My eyes are really sore from straining to see my computer screen,
so I may have to rest before starting my large scale paintings. As Maureen was just singing in my ear, "Tomorrow, tomorrow
there's always tomorrow." So, since she was torturing me with some Rudolph song, I told her she has to write the poem
to go along with my illustration I drew and painted tonight. Thus, she titled and wrote the poem for this posting.
I've linked

Santa on Vacation
Twas the day after Christmas
And all through the island
Not a snow drop was falling
Like it was on Long Island.

The starfish was washed
on the shore near the sea
In hopes of glimpse
of a closer palm tree.

The children were playing
outside on the beach
While visions of rectangles
memorized each.

And mamma in her lipstick,
and I in my glove,
were wondering what just had
come from above.

Cuz from out on the boat
there arose such a clatter
I dashed out to the lagoon
to see what was the matter.

Away to the dock
I flew like a flash
to try to determine
what made the huge crash.

The sun on the breast of the
sand I well know
Gave the lustre of mid-day
to objects below.

Happy Vacation, Santa

Christmas Roses

Hi Everyone! Even though technically it is still December 26th here on the west coast, it is three hours ahead on the east coast where my sister lives, so it is now December 27th. Kristie's birthday!!! Happy Birthday! Vegas trip coming up in 2011. I feel that aftershock! Cover, duck, and hide!
I had a fun gig with Tim at the Wild Vine in Mill Creek. It was a special gig because my son, Michael, sat in on the congas with us. He did a great job. Stephanie, Michael's fiance, also played a couple of songs on the congas too, and Marky Mark played the jingle bells. Saturday was a fun Christmas gig with Tim Turner and Billy Spaulding at the Rimrock in Lake City. Today, as in Sunday, December 26th, Michael, Carol, and I had our christmas dinner. Michael cooked most of it (ham, beans, sweet potatoes, etc.), and it tasted great! I have a little bit of extra time this week to plan, organize, and paint a few large scale pictures. Hopefully starting tonight, but I am feeling a little full. I might have to take a nap!
The art piece for this blog is a colored pencil sketch I did of some roses. I've linked Marilyn Monroe to this posting singing Santa Baby. Nighty night. xxoo

Crossing the Bridge

Hi Everyone! Merry Christmas eve to all. I've linked Beethoven - Vladimir Ashkenazy - Symphony No.9 Mvt.4 to this blog, since Beethoven is one of my favorite composers. I played at the Barrel in Burien with Doug McGrew, Tim Turner, Nelson, and Billy on Tuesday. It was a fun gig. I'm playing tonight with Tim Turner at the Wild Vine in Bothell. I painted this watercolor last night of the bridge over the river for my sister, Kristie's birthday which is December 27th. She always complained of getting less presents due her birthday being so close to Christmas. Wah! I'm getting geared up to churn out some larger paintings next week and to finally getting my studio organized and set up. I hope Santa is good to everyone! Have a nice day! xxoo

Trees with Hands

Hi everyone! I can't believe almost a week has passed since I last posted to my blog. Oh well. Too much has been happening with the holiday season here. Tonight/this morning is the lunar eclipse.
I played a fun gig with Granite Reign on Friday night. My son and I finally decorated our christmas tree last night. I was saddened to hear that Michael Kahler, a Seattle musician, passed away in his sleep last night. Well, I have a long day/night ahead of me tomorrow, filled with lessons and gig at the Barrel in Burien with Tim Turner and Doug McGrew. Nighty night. xxoo

I've linked Aaron Copland - Billy the Kid-Concert Suite to this posting.

Finally realizing the truth

Man and Woman in a Vase

Hi everyone! Today was an awesome day, even though I was a wee bit tired and sleep deprived. My wonderful son, Michael, treated me and his fiance, Stephanie, to tickets to see the Picasso show at SAM. It was the Masterpieces from the Musee National in Picasso, Paris to be exact. This series of Picasso's paintings spanned from 1906 - 1972. The show was very inspiring to me. I created a piece about 18" x 30" using the medium of oil pastels and chalk, which I have a limited amount of experience with, in response to the Picasso show. The piece is called, 'Man and Woman in a Vase.' I've linked Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata to this posting. Nighty night.

Man and Woman in a Vase

Man and woman in a vase
What sort of love
Shall you embrace?
A love incrusted in harmony and peace
Or a love coated in strife and decrease
The answer it seems is to realize
In the end love is experienced uniquely
Through what you create
With your soul’s eye

One Winged Angel

Hi everyone! My son is home from college - yeah! Even though my lungs still hurt, my energy level feels much better with Michael around. I held my winter recital for my music students today at Avamere Rehabilitation Center. It went well. It was a lot of work though. Typing all of the Christmas lyric sheets that weren't used - next year. Trying to set up a PA, that worked fine at home, in 15 minutes (it usually takes at least a half hour to set up a PA, but Avamere can't clear people out of the lunch room till 15 minutes before we are supposed to start the recital), and then the PA doesn't work at the recital site. Ahhh Murphy's Law at work. I want to thank all of my wonderful students who performed, and all of the family members who came to watch. Thank You! I also want to say a special thanks to Theo - for playing the snare, and Michael and Stephanie for helping me set up, tear down, video, etc. Thanks again. I created this acrylic painting and poem tonight to unwind after everything. I've also linked a song called - One Winged Angel - for Final Fantasy VII (Eminence Symphony). Nighty night. xxoo

Navigating Rough Waters

Hi everyone! I know it has been awhile since I've posted to my blog, but my lungs have been feeling worse than ever. Once my music students' recital is over next Sunday I'm going to make it a priority to be seen by a doctor even if I have to go to the emergency room. It is getting harder to breathe, and I'm getting weaker and more exhausted by the day. It is becoming painful and physically more difficult for me to play gigs lately. I did play two fun last minute gigs last week. The first spontaneous gig was with Mac - guitar, Donte-drums, and Darrius-keys. We played at a club called Fuel in Pioneer Square. The music felt great, and Sean was an awesome sound man. The second last minute gig was with Tim Turner (Child) and Rick Spano (Randy Hansen's drummer). I always musically enjoy playing with Tim and Rick. After my music students' recital on Sunday, I'm planning on taking some time for myself. After working so hard (only four days off in the past year, and working both day and night for over 150 of those days), I really need a break both mentally, creatively, and physically. Hopefully I'll have a few weeks to finish my CD, finish setting up my studio, and paint some more large scale paintings for my series. When I hung out in New York a few years ago the DJ was spinning Sean Paul and I really liked the combination of reggae and rap that he utilizes in his music. Nighty night! xxoo

Bridge to Somewhere

Hi everyone! Another long weekend of teaching and gigs. Yesterday, November 27th, was the birthday of both Jimi Hendrix and my bff Susan. I've linked Jimi Hendrix's song - Angel to this blog posting. Happy Birthday! I think I need to lay down and rest a bit. My cough has persisted and it is causing me to feel dizzy. The dizziness is probably due to a lack of oxygen to my brain. Nighty night. xxoo

Bridge to Somewhere
Crossing over the bridge to somewhere
Takes all my energy and focus currently
Spears puncture me rhythmically
While I cautiously meander along my path
I must put more effort
Into creating a stronger shield
To protect my delicate dreams
Which will lead me to that
Better new somewhere
By quiet streams

Michael Archangel - Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi everyone! Happy Thanksgiving to everybody. My son and I had a nice quiet thanksgiving this evening. We had ham for dinner instead of turkey, since neither one of us really likes turkey. I painted this quick watercolor of my son, unbeknownst to him, while he was working on a project an hour ago. Well, I just realized that I have a lot of paper work to complete by tomorrow, so nighty night. xxoo

Alien Love

Hi Everyon! It is a winter wonderland here in the Seattle area. Beautiful! If I get a chance later this evening I'll try to paint the snow dusted scenery. I've linked Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' to this posting, because I was going to play it at the gig last Thursday. Even though I love Marvin Gaye's songwriting and singing talents, after reading his biography I've never really felt the same way about his music. He was very abusive to woman which lead to his demise. I had an enjoyable musical experience with my student Ruby on Saturday. We played two songs at Couth Buzzard Books Espresso Buono Cafe cabaret. Ruby's mom, Kate, was the MC, and her dad is a partner/owner at Couth Buzzard. They have weekly open mics and other events, so check it out! Ruby did an awesome job playing 'Tune Up' by Miles Davis. We also played my new song 'Listen People'. Hopefully I'll get to record the song soon. I'm off to try and sweep the snow from my car and schlepp through the elements. Have a nice warm day! xxoo Laurie

The Last Winter Rose

Hi everybody! Linked to this posting is: Pink Floyd - 'Hey You'
Tonight after teaching lessons all evening, I painted my first real full size watercolor (it is too big to fit the entire picture on my scanner). It is 40 degrees outside, but it sure feels colder. Off to read and rest. Nighty night. xxoo

Upside Down Butterfly

Hi everyone! Ohhh, I have a night off. Yahooey! Okay, I'll try to contain myself. I had another fun gig with Granite Reign yesterday. I taught some lessons this morning, and now I've been trying to catch up on organizing and just plain old thinking. Trying to find my own thoughts again. I still have tons of paper work to do, but oh well I think I'll get a couple hours of sleep tonight. Tomorrow, as in Sunday, I'm playing at a memorial for Charles White held at the Central in Pioneer Square. The Charles White band was the first gig I played when I moved to Seattle. The Charles White band use to host an awesome jam down at Larrys in Pioneer Square every Wednesday for, I think, 13 years. Many great players came and sat in i.e. George Benson, Buddy Miles, Lou Rawls to name a few. Charles was a charismatic front man. He had some great unique dance moves. Charles will be greatly missed.
Nighty night. xxoo

Secret Wish

Hola! First of all it is Veterans Day! I personally want to say thank you to all the veterans of the USA. I know it has been the longest time I've had so far between postings, but I have my excuses all nicely hand printed on this 3"x5" card. Okay, first I've been fighting that awful bronchitis on the verge of pneumonia bug, second I've been teaching all day and then gigging at night at least 6 of the past 11 days (three different bands), it is really cold (I have to curl up in my warm bed), and finally pure burn out exhaustion. I'll let you in on a little insight to me, if you care, I never get bored. My mind is always thinking of a several new creative ideas to do every day while always thinking about my long term goals. Plus I create in many different media platforms i.e., painting, songwriting & performing music, and writing, and I'm always trying to find a second to master my crafts. Therefore, I really don't crave social activity, and I'm really happy when I finally get a chance to be alone with myself and think. I've linked Lola by the Kinks to this posting.
Nighty night. xxoo

But as for now
I’ll meditate a long while
Till my secret
Circles back my way

Purple Tree

Hola! I'm feeling a little bit sick today. Very tired, but I need to drag my body off to teach some lessons. Here is a quicky post that I drew and wrote last night. Since I sang this song at rehearsal last night, here is link to it - Poison - Every Rose Has a Thorn. Have a nice day! xxxoo

Purple Tree

What are you searching for?
A moment of kindness

Something to help strengthen your roots
Instead of cutting you down
And turning you into a roof

In a Green Monster's Mouth

Hello! It has been awhile since I posted to my blog. I've been feeling very exhausted and burned out. Hopefully someday soon I'll get a break so that I can work on my paintings, songwriting, writing, reading, and resting. At least I had a fun time playing this weekend with Granite Reign (Hans, Eric, & Chris). Finally I'm getting a chance to play my originals again, and Hans' cool originals. Also, I get to sing more songs. I hope that I can find a wee bit of time to book some original acoustic gigs, finish setting up my studio, and finish my CDs. That is if I don't die first from exhaustion. Oh well, it's a flip of a coin which will come first. Another long day of teaching ahead of me, so "have a nice day!" xxoo

Hi! I actually created this illustration last night, having been inspired by the Project Runway Finale. I really thought Mondo should have won. Oh well, I'm just not into that granola hippie fashion. Very boring, and not very runway high fashion. I have a super long day today including teaching and a gig with Granite Reign. Have a nice day! xxoo

Smiley Kite

Hi Everyone! Brrrrr, it is cold!!! Fall is definitely here. I've linked The Carpenters -'Rainy Days and Mondays' to this post, partly because it is Monday. I accomplished an online copyright of my new song, 'Listen People' this morning. Yeah. Well, I have more than a million chores left to complete, but I am finally making a dent. Nighty night. xxop

Sky of Shapes

Hola! I love this song - Hide in Your Shell - singer Roger Hodgson, Supertramp Feeling a bit under weather, I stayed home today. I hope to start on a new surreal painting tonight. This morning, while my son and I worked on some projects, the world gymnastics championship was on TV in the background. One commentator commented that a certain gymnast couldn't compete because she was injured, and I found humor in the other commentator's comment which was, "We are all a little injured aren't we." I also watched part of the Seahawks game, which they won 22-10 over the Cardinals. Nighty night. xxoo

Sky of Shapes
Sky of shapes
Show me my faith
If a door closes
Will a new welcoming window
Beckon me to jump
Should I instead
Turn and run
To a new place, like LA, to hide
Or should I wait one more painful day
Under this depressing gray sky
I reach for a triangle
I wish upon a square
I pray for a circle
To remove my soul’s dispair

Furry Creature

Howdy! Well, I had a really busy teaching day yesterday from 1 pm to 7 pm, and then I played a gig at the Wild Vine starting at 8 pm with Tim Turner. It was a lot of fun, and my bff Cindi and her daughter Cristie came to the show. I taught some lessons today, and then my wonderful son and I worked on some projects. I have a song that I sing at some of my gigs linked to this posting: Tom Petty - 'Free Fallin'. Nighty night! xxooo

Octostar

Hello! Okay, I wrote my poem and drew my illustration last night, but I was too hunkered down and cozy in my bed to post it.
Octostar is a term I made up, so I don't think you will find it in the wikipedia anytime soon. I taught lessons yesterday, and I still have a lot of organizing to do. My son is coming home this weekend, and hopefully we will make a dent in arranging the studio room. We may also try to film one of my music videos (not sure, depending on how my energy is?) I started to read Valerie Bertinelli's book, 'Losing It', which my bff Susan left at my house when she moved to Colorado. I actually was 'hit on' by Eddie Van Halen (my bff Maureen can verify) when I was living in the Bay Area, and I was playing at the Four Seasons in San Francisco with Ricardo Scales. Many of the bands that played at the Concord Pavilion and the Shoreline Amphitheatre all stayed at the Four Seasons. I could actually relate to Eddie's workaholism when I was reading about it in Valerie's book. I know what it is like to be inspired by a new artistic idea and then want to focus on it till its fruition. Off to another busy day. Toodles! xxoo
P. S. I have linked Van Halen's 'Jump' to this posting! Great song, and I love David's splits - ohh!

Mindless Repetition

Hola! Okay, I can't upload my illustration till tomorrow because of site maintenance, so I'll post only the poem for now. I had a long day of teaching, and then I finished writing the song that is due for the showcase. I think it sounds pretty good. I really enjoy being creative more than anything in life - okay, well maybe not anything, but being creative ranks in the top 10 for making me feel good, in the moment, in spirit, and that I'm living my destiny. I've linked Michael Jackson's - 'Bad' video to this posting. The dancing is amazing in this video! Nighty night. xxoo

Cleaning Limits

Hola! Okay, I'm feeling overwhelmingly joyful I get another night to myself to refocus on my goals and create some art and songwriting. I've been asked to play a group show at the Triple Door next month, so I need to finish writing a song I started a few months ago. I hope I can find my notes on it somewhere - okay I'm still working on my organizational skills, but I'm doing a lot better than before. I really want to start tonight on another large surreal watercolor painting too. I've linked up Eric Carmen's youtube live performance of 'All By Myself', because my friend Susan didn't know what I was talking about when I tried to sing the song to her on the phone today. Deep in the Eye

Hi everyone! It has been a long time since I posted to my blog. I experienced the busiest week all year long this past week, so this is my 'dog ate my homework' excuse for not posting. I shot a film with my friend Scott Wednesday morning down in Pioneer Square. It was a great adrenaline rush. I also rehearsed and played a gig with a new band for me, Granite Reign. It was fun playing with Hans, Chris, and Eric. I like the grooves of Hans' original songs. Well, I'm not going to go into everything tonight - gotta rest and get ready for another busy week, so.... nighty night. xxoo

Booby Trap

Howdy! I had another wonderful rock and roll cover gig last night - kind of like brick laying in the mental stimulation aspect for me. Anyway, my wonderful son is home from college - yeah! We had a great drive up to the gig through listening to one of our favorite NPR shows - WireTap, featuring Jonathan Goldstein. If you ever get a chance to listen to Jonathan's show or download a podcast, I highly recommend it. I have another night off from gigging to night -YEAH! Hopefully soon I will be able to perform my originals, fusion, jazz or anything else that requires a brain cell. Linked to this blog - another favorite song and performer that I like - Seal -Kiss From a Rose.

Hola! I'm glad that I'm home tonight. Yeah!!! It is so nice to have a few hours to think my own thoughts and dream my own dreams without constantly being bombarded with opinions from strangers I meet at the gigs in bars where I play. Yahooo. I also watched a current episode of Project Runway tonight. So cool. I feel like I'm finally getting my life back. I've linked a cool live video of The Doors to this posting. Nighty night. xxoo

Must Haves

Hi everyone! Okay, I'm feeling tired after a long day of teaching, cleaning, and organizing.
Today, as in October 5th, was my father's birthday. As I stated in a previous blog posting, my father was a remarkable man, and he achieved an incredible amount (including being inducted into the hall of fame, being an athletic trainer for the winter USA olympic team, etc.) in his field of sports medicine before his untimely death at the age of 49. Some of my students have acquainted me with the singer Miley Cyrus. I actually really enjoy her songs, especially the one I've linked here, The Climb. Nighty night. xxoo

Climbing Up!

Hello! I'm so ecstatic to be home tonight. I really love watching Indie films, and I've been savoring an opportunity to do the aforementioned. Of course I multi task at the same time I'm watching the movies, and multi tasking is one of the positive aspects of being a woman (supposedly we are more adept at multi tasking than men). Anyway, this weekend was hellishly busy colored with a lot of teaching and gigging. Hopefully I will recover quickly from all the strange depleting energy I encounter at my gigs so that I can refocus on my goals. Nighty night. xxoo

When we met once before
In a previous life
